The Balancing Act with Jen de Leon

If you’ve been an S&B follower for a while, or you may have probably attended an event we hosted at LUMINARY in NYC. Not only is the space amazing but their Fitness Director, Jen de Leon is equally as amazing, friendly, and fun! We had her join us to talk about how she balances her life.

Tell us a little bit about yourself.

I grew up in Sydney, training and then working in Musical Theatre. Fitness so gracefully fell into my lap, and I started working for XTEND BARRE. After 5 years managing our flagship, training and also working in with franchise support Australia-wide, I applied to come and work for the very first Manhattan XTEND BARRE location. I am now gratefully working for XTEND and also LUMINARY NYC as their Fitness Director. LUMINARY is an amazing collaboration hub in NoMad.

What is balance to you?

Having time amidst the work and chaos of New York City to have a personal life full of things I enjoy! Sitting and binge-watching Netflix, massages, working out, seeing friends, IR saunas, walking/running in Central Park.

How do you achieve balance?

How do I achieve it? I set my work hours! I manage a fitness studio, so if we are understaffed or if there are emergencies, etc, it does mean I do need to step in, but I try to make sure I don't have too many 12-hour workdays in my week and that the hours just all kind of come out in the wash. Also, I try not to do too many emails over the weekend, as long as my team is ok-- I always want to make sure they are supported! This gives me some space to unplug and just focus on ME!

What advice do you have for someone struggling to find work/life balance?

I find being in a routine helps, I like to make sure I have a really well-balanced diet (this means meal preps!)- it definitely helps to keep stress levels down and increases better brain function, schedule in your workouts like appointments/meetings for yourself, and definitely learn how to say NO!

Do you have any go-to resources or rituals that help you find balance?

I've always thought meditation would be good for me but always had trouble getting started following through. I'm 2 months into using the CALM app and I love it! I also follow a ton of food/wellness blogs both on Facebook and IG to keep me motivated, food recipes, get new ideas, and a constant reminder of how easy it is to stay fit and healthy! My faves are Food Matters (Aussie company), Mind Body Green, and Well+Good.

Now let’s have some fun, what are some random things we don’t know about you?

For someone who grew up in Sydney and LOVES the beach, I am a terrible swimmer! :(
