Have you ever struggled to find a protein snack that you really enjoyed? Look no further, Protein Power Ball is a one-of-a-kind snack your future self will thank you for. Clean ingredients, no preservatives, 6g of protein per serving. One of the driving forces behind this ball is Becky Pleat, Co-Founder and CEO of Protein Power Ball. We were lucky enough to get an in-depth look at balance as a SHE-EO.
Tell us a little bit about yourself.
I am the co-founder/ CEO of Protein Power Ball, a health food company based in Red Bank, NJ that makes bite-sized protein balls. I currently live in Red Bank but am originally from Troy, NY. I went to college at Massachusetts College of Pharmacy in Boston and started a job at a pharmaceutical company right after graduation. I still work full time as a pharmacist, but I have to thank my crazy travel schedule for the idea to create Protein Power Ball! Between constantly being on the go and more often than not succumbing to the indulgent but sugar-packed airport snacks, I was in search of a healthy snack that would provide the clean nutrition I needed in a convenient and individualized way. I would always try to travel with protein bars but would get fed up with the taste or how it made me feel, and to be honest I could never even finish a full bar! These were some of the main reasons I started Protein Power Ball- it was sort of the perfect storm of following my passion for health and wellness and channeling my inner Rachel Ray to see if I could come up with a snack that was truly satisfying but made with real ingredients.
I quickly realized that this was something that could be so much bigger than just having a convenient snack on hand. With every event I did and all the conversations I had, I noticed that fitness and nutrition are two of the most talked about topics (especially for women) yet, there is still so much confusion and controversy out there surrounding it. I thought about my personal journey with health and how for so long I really had no idea of what “diet” I should follow or what workout plan I should be doing. It wasn’t until recently that I’ve learned more about the foods we eat, how they actually affect your body, and how to eat more intuitively. My goal with Protein Power Ball is to help empower women, with an emphasis on young women/ teens by partnering with fitness organizations to help build healthy habits early on. I think empowerment for women has a lot to do with health and fitness, and the earlier you start to learn about nutrition, etc. the easier it is to make wellness a lifestyle!
What is balance to you?
I feel like this is something that is so drastically different for everyone, but for me balance means being able to put my time and energy towards the things that are important to me. A huge part of that is growing Protein Power Ball and being able to help people live healthier lives by spreading awareness around health and nutrition. At this point, I don’t think of it as “work” and “home”, the two are very interconnected (probably also thanks to the fact that my boyfriend is my partner in the company too)! Luckily we are both very passionate about helping others and putting our energy towards the business, but we also know that you need to take care of yourself first if you are going to help others. Working out, staying active, eating healthy, and taking time to rest/ recharge are also some key things when I think about balance. Ultimately it’s how we take care of ourselves that affect our functioning and heath in the long run, so I always try to make sure that’s a big part of the equation.
How do you achieve balance?
Balance for me is really all about putting the health of my mind and body first. Everyone has their off days, and when I find myself in a slump or feeling unmotivated, these are the times that I really try to be aware of what I’m eating because I know it will have a direct impact on how I feel. I’m also a very social person, so making sure that I’m able to spend plenty of time with family and friends is very important to me!
What advice do you have for someone struggling to find work/life balance?
My advice for anyone that is struggling to find work/life balance would be to keep your mind and your body active! It can be tough to make healthy choices or make yourself a priority when you’re feeling overwhelmed, but even taking 10 minutes to go for a walk and clear your mind can help alleviate stress. Also, take time to reflect! Think about how actions throughout the day made you feel and try to do more of what makes you feel energized. If all else fails, my go-to is to make a list to help me get organized for the day. It helps to prioritize what needs to get done and the satisfaction you get from completing a task and crossing it off the list will give you the motivation to keep going! Very important- try to limit your list to the top 3 most important things you need to get done!
Do you have any go-to resources or rituals that help you find balance?
I would say I have many resources and rituals that help me find balance, it really depends on the day and the situation. I’m a self-proclaimed caffeine addict so one of my favorite rituals is heading to the coffee shop in the morning to get my cold brew. The fact that I can take that time for myself, even if it’s just 15 minutes sets the tone for the day and reminds me to keep myself a priority. This is also when I usually reflect on what I’m grateful for. It really helps to do this first thing because when I think about and appreciate all that I have to be grateful for in this world, it’s very hard to get worked up over the small obstacles that typically arise during the day. I also love to get my body moving so heading for a workout or even a short walk if I’m tight on time is something that always makes me feel centered. Also, something that I make a priority every single day is to LAUGH- life is way too short and the more comedy and humor you infuse into your life, the better off! For comedic relief I generally turn to my boyfriend (also my business partner) who always knows how to put a smile on my face.
Now let’s have some fun, what are some random things we don’t know about you?
I LOVE comedy movies and I have a secret talent of being able to recite every line from Dumb & Dumber, Bridesmaids, and Wedding Crashers! I also don’t have ANY musical talent at all, but I can rap almost every Drake song ever created (however this definitely only sounds good in my head).
