The Balancing Act with Emily Chestler

The Balancing Act with Emily Chestler

Today we are sharing Emily Chestler’s take on balance. As the Marketing and Social Media manager for one of NYC’s top studios, Fithouse she has some interesting insight for all our readers.

Tell us a little bit about yourself.

I'm a 25 year old born and raised New Yorker, and I currently am Fithouse's Marketing + Social Media Manager. I have always had a passion for fitness - specifically group fitness - and being able to say you love what you do from 9am-6pm everyday, is equally as rare as it is rewarding. Ironically, I worked with restaurants and chefs prior to Fithouse. Food is one of my other passions... #balance as they say.

What does balance mean to you?

What a perfect segue into balance. It's as if I planned that or something. Balance is a very unique word, it has a special and individual meeting to everyone. My definition of balance is going to look very different from yours, and that's OK, and how it should be. To me, balance is being able to find that perfect sweet spot of feeling happy, healthy and satisfied. By restricting yourself, you're only hurting yourself. And by overdoing it, you're never going to be truly complete or satisfied either. Will I take my barre class in the morning, and eat a burger and fries for dinner? Anyone who knows me knows the answer is YES.

What defines balance for you and how do you achieve them?

I value my relationships with my family and friends above anything else in my life. While everyone has busy schedules, I find that there is always room to make time for the people who are important to you. Finding mutual interests whether it's taking a workout class together, grabbing a quick meal, or simply a phone call on my way to work to hear about that persons day - I always make time. I am very lucky to have a loving and supportive network who does the same for me.

What advice do you have for someone struggling to find work/life balance?

Work hard, play hard. Be able to prioritize what is important to you and make the change that is going to make you feel best about yourself. As someone who works in Social Media, I am always "on." However, I also understand that if I answered every email, reposted every story, responded to every comment that I would never be able to detach from my phone and enjoy myself. I've set aside times in my days and weekend that I will check everything rather than sporadically checking throughout the day and being glued to my phone. For me, work/life balance is so important. Working smart, hard and efficient to ensure that you can leave work and be present is key.

Do you have any go-to resources or rituals that help you find balance?

To be honest, no. But if anyone has any, feel free to send my way! I know how I best function and what I need to do to alleviate stress, feel good, and be the happiest version of myself. Sometimes I really need to sweat It out in class, other times I am craving sushi and won't stop talking about It until I eat It, other days I'm happy to sit on the couch. There's no one answer or solution. Of course everyone has their days and nobody is perfect (unless you ask my mom, she will say I'm perfect), and I've learned that taking care of yourself and doing what you love goes a long way.

Now let’s have some fun, what are some random things we don’t know about you?

I dot the i in Emily with a heart on all my legal documents. I'm a fitness fanatic, but can't ride a real bike and I went to University of Wisconsin - Go Badgers!
